Danny Welbeck's injury plagued three years at Arsenal may be drawing to a close, with the former Manchester United striker becoming a surprise target for one of the Gunners' Premier League rivals.

Since arriving at the Emirate stadium on transfer deadline day in 2014, Welbeck has struggled for both fitness and goals, making just 69 appearances and scoring 17 times in three seasons and now, the England international may be on the move again.

The arrival of Alexandre Lacazette has provided more competition for places up front in Arsene Wenger's squad and the initial belief was that Olivier Giroud would be the man to make way for the new £52 million arrival from Lyon.

Both West Ham and Everton were credited with an interest in the former Montpellier striker, with the Toffees believed to be the favourites to land him once the Hammers secured the services of Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez.

However, a deal to take Giroud to Goodison Park seems to have stalled in recent weeks and Everton boss Ronald Koeman may be tempted to switch his attention towards Welbeck, according to the Mirror.

After the £75 million sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United last month, Koeman has brought Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney on board to bolster his strikefroce, but still requires a target man to lead his line, hence the initial interest in Giroud.

Welbeck, a £16 million arrival in North London in 2014, would command a fee of £30 million, almost double what Arsenal paid for him, the Mirror reports.

With Lacazette a likely starter and Arsene Wenger adamant that Alexis Sanchez is going nowhere, despite the Chilean still not having committed himself to a new contract at the Emirates, Welbeck's chances of first team action next season may be limited during the 2017/18 campaign and a move to Merseyside would allow Welbeck to return to the North West.

At 26 years of age, the England international needs to make his next move count after years of stagnation thanks to persistent injury problems.
