Jose Mourinho has been incredibly vocal in the wake of disappointing results against Leicester City and Burnley about Manchester United's need to spend more money in order to compete with Manchester City and it appears the Portuguese manager already has several targets on his hit list.

And near the top of the list is Napoli midfielder Jorginho.

Mourinho is likely going to need to strengthen his midfield with Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick both out of contract in the summer and not apparently close to agreeing new deals at Old Trafford, with Fellaini turning down a recent offer and Carrick likely having one eye on retirement.

The Manchester Evening News are reporting that Jorginho, who only won his first cap for Italy last year, has been added to Mourinho's list of potential targets to replace Carrick, who has made just one appearance this season due to a heart condition.

The 26-year-old has thrived in Naples since arriving from Verona in 2013, rising to prominence alongside the likes of Marek Hamsik, Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne at the San Paolo.

United did bring Nemanja Matic in from Chelsea in a £40 million deal over the summer and, while the Serbian has won a lot of plaudits for his performances at the base of United's midfield, outside him and Paul Pogba, who's missed a large section of the current campaign through injury and suspension, United are lacking real strength in depth.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford recently, although it is now believed that the Brazilian born Jorignho is Mourinho's preferred target.

Elsewhere, United continue to be linked with moves for Mesut Ozil, Antoine Griezmann and Paulo Dybala, while it is believed Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan could all leave the club as early as next month, during the January transfer window.

Yet again, it's going to be a busy month of transfer rumours around Old Trafford.
