Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by third-tier side Alcoyano who caused a massive upset last night.

Zinedine Zidane's side took the lead during Wednesday's cup clash but they failed to hold on, crashing out of the competition in one of the biggest giant-killings in Spain.

Alcoyano - who play in Segunda Division B - scored a dramatic winner in extra-time after going down to 10 men following Ramon Lopez's red card.

Jose Solbes forced extra-time after cancelling out Eder Militao's opener in the first-half.

Juanan Casanova put the minnows ahead five minutes from time, slotting home from inside the box with his goal sparking wild scenes.

Their bench exploded in celebration with Zidane laughing on the touchline.

The La Liga giants have won the competition an incredible 19 times in their storied history, yet have not won it for seven years.

What's more, this is the fifth time a third-tier team has eliminated them since 2001.

While Zidane rang the chances, their side still featured the likes of Marcelo, Casemiro, Isco and Vinicius Junior as well as Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema.

Speaking after his side's humiliating cup exit, the Frenchman said: "This is football, it is very difficult because we played against a Segunda B side and we had to win the game.

"It has not been like that, but it is not a shame. This can happen, this happens, these are things that happen in a football career, I assume responsibility and we will continue working.

"We will not go crazy."

Real return to action on Saturday when they resume their league campaign against Alaves.

They currently occupy second place, four points behind cross-town rivals Atletico who have two games in hand.
