Adidas seemingly expected their man Lionel Messi to scoop the Ballon d'Or at the start of the year and had a special edition pair of boots on the way had he won the coveted award.
Messi finished second in the running, with Cristiano Ronaldo collecting the trophy for the fourth time.
And had Messi emerged victorious in what would have been his sixth Ballon d'Or win, he would have had a special pair of cleats released to mark the achievement.

Footy Headlines managed to access images of the boots, which were set to be released in January.
The bulk of the boot is made up of metallic gold colour, with the tongue of the Adidas Messi +16 Pure Agility boots red.

Because Ronaldo came out on top, these boots will most likely remain unreleased for the foreseeable future.
Nike cashed in on their representative's success by releasing a pair of 'Nike Mercurial Superfly V Vitórias' boots that celebrated the fourth Ballon d'Or win of Ronaldo's career.
