John Terry has answered football's age-old question; Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?

The Chelsea legend came face-to-face with both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo during his illustrious playing career.

From Champions League meetings to international tournaments.

He's now the latest figure in football to weigh in on the Ronaldo-Messi debate and in doing so, he's given a very diplomatic answer.

"I always say Messi for pure natural talent! But any young footballer out there follow and work as hard as Ronaldo does will have a chance. Two phenomenons," he brilliantly said on social media.

Terry's former club and international teammate Ashley Cole also issued his thoughts on the pair of footballing greats.

The decorated left-back was a special guest on Monday Night Football, and picked who was the tougher opponent.

And Cole didn't hesitate, immediately siding with Messi.

"It has to be Messi," he said. "People talk about Ronaldo more because I played against him more. But I think to mark Messi, on his day... he was just too good for me.

"But, again, he's never scored [against me]," he cheekily added.

Ronaldo and Messi have been dueling for years but, of course, the Portuguese superstar ended his association with Spanish football by securing a transfer to Juventus in the summer.

New league, same Ronaldo. He's the leading scorer in the league with an impressive 17 Serie A goals to his name.

Messi isn't doing too bad this season, either. He's weighed in with a remarkable 21 La Liga goals.

There's just no stopping Ronaldo or Messi.
