Roberto Firmino may be enjoying a fruitful start to the new season, firing himself to the top of Liverpool's goal scorer charts with three goals in his first five games of the campaign, but the Brazilian's career actually began at the other end of the pitch.

The £28m man has revealed that, until the age of 17 he played as either a full-back or centre-half. The former Hoffenheim man, now 24, has made the transition from back to front with relative ease, with 75 career goals to date.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Firmino said, "I started out as a defender. I played as a full-back and then I moved into the centre. I played defence right the way through until the Under-18s. Honestly!"

Given that Firmino doesn't exactly come across as the most physically dominant of players, perhaps it's a good job he ditched the centre-half position for the more glamorous forward role.
