The Netherlands paid tribute to Goran Pandev on his 122nd and final appearance for North Macedonia with a classy pre-match gift.

The 37-year-old striker, who made his international debut in 2001 during a World Cup qualifier against Turkey, was honoured with a personalized shirt ahead of kick-off.

As his prolific international career comes to an end, Netherlands captain Gini Wijnaldum posed for a picture with Pandev as the pair both held up a Dutch jersey with the number 122 printed on the back.

Last week, an emotional Pandev confirmed that the European Championship clash against Frank de Boer's side would be his last.

"Yes, this is my last match in the Macedonian jersey," Pandev confirmed before Monday's clash in Group C.

"This is the end of my career in the national team. I am happy to say goodbye in such a way. I'm happy to retire this way. I can say that I could not have wished for a better farewell.

North Macedonia managed to secure a place in a major international tournament for the first time thanks to a goal from Pandev in a qualifier against Georgia last year.

But despite coming into the European Championship with a positive run under their belt, Igor Angelovski's side failed to register a win in the competition, losing to Ukraine and Austria before suffering a disappointing 3-0 defeat against a strong Netherlands side.

Goals from Memphis Depay and a brace from Gini Wijnaldum sealed their fate on Monday night but despite the outcome, fans of North Macedonia can still be proud of their achievements.
