Rafael Van Der Vaart Was Banned From Wearing Red Boots At Real Betis

Rafael van der Vaart had a bizarre clause in his Real Betis contract that meant he was paid €114,429 for not wearing red boots.

The Dutchman joined Betis on a free in 2015 and it was considered a coup for the 'Los Verdiblancos' at the time.

But van der Vaart received a lucrative contract from the newly promoted La Liga outfit - including the boot clause.

Per, the midfielder earned 14 separate payments for following the rules meaning he pocketed €1,602,006 overall.

Van der Vaart's dream move back to Spain was disappointing as he made just seven appearances for Betis before moving to Danish side FC Midtjylland in 2016.

Contract clauses are always fascinating to read about as it shows just how desperate clubs are seal a player.

Case in point, the legendary Ronaldinho's 'nightclub clause' when he joined Brazilian side Flamengo in 2011.

The 40-year-old returned to his homeland after a stint with AC Milan and he was known to love the nightlife during his time in Italy.

And the former Barcelona superstar wanted that same luxury of clubbing in Brazil and made it an important request in his deal with the Brazilian side.

Ronaldinho insisted on a clause that allowed him to continue clubbing at least two nights a week - and Flamengo agreed to his request.

The Copa America and World Cup-winning star was heavily criticised for his choice of lifestyle, despite being one of the finest players to have ever played in the sport.

Paolo, who was a season ticket holder at the San Siro, told Bleacher Report in 2017 that Ronaldinho loved to party even if the Italian side lost their matches.

"Win, lose, play well, play badly -- Ronaldinho didn't care. He would still find a party and enjoy himself long into the night," he said.

"We loved him at Milan, but he hurt himself and his career, never worried who saw him."
