Manchester City star Bernardo Silva has dealt an early blow to Manchester United's League Cup hopes with a stunning opener at Old Trafford.

The defending Premier League champions are in action with their arch-rivals in the first leg of their semi-final clash.

And Silva silenced the United faithful with a sensational 25-yard strike from outside of the box.

The 25-year-old Portuguese star picked up the ball out on the right wing and skipped past Fred before unleashing a powerful left-footed curler past a helpless David de Gea.

And fans have flocked to Twitter to praise Silva for his sensational opener against the Red Devils.

Silva would continue to punish United after setting up City's second with a brilliant display.

The Portugal international skipped past one challenge before playing through a perfect through ball in behind Victor Lindelof.

The 25-year-old United defender desperately scrambled to slide the ball clear, only to toe it into the path of Riyad Mahrez as he skipped around De Gea to score City's second.

De Gea managed to save Kevin De Bruyne's close-range effort, but the ball would cannon out and hit Andreas Pereira before landing into the back of the United net.

City lead United 3-0 at half-time.

Full-time result: Marcus Rashford pulled one back for United in the second half, but City would seal a 3-1 victory on the night.
