Willy Aubameyang reacted to the news by leaving a message on a post captioned: "Our captain" along with a picture of Xhaka.
Willy reacted to the post with eight sad emoji faces before swiftly removing his comment from Instagram.
But the damage was done with Arsenal supporters reacting to his social media activity.
Pierre-Emerick was under consideration for Arsenal captaincy along with Rob Holding and David Luiz, among others, but Emery has opted for the Swiss enforcer, who has previously worn the captain's armband.
