In what is the most bizarre story on transfer deadline day, Oldham Athletic have sacked Anthony Gerrard, cousin of Liverpool legend Steven, after he told a fan to "throw sh*te at himself" in a Twitter on social media.
Gerrard, formerly of Huddersfield and Cardiff City, had 12 months running on his deal at Boundary Park.
But Latics felt they had no option but to terminate his deal after his social media spat. The 32-year old had 14 days to appeal the decision but opted against doing so.
The club issued the following statement on their official website:
Advert
"Oldham Athletic can confirm the club have terminated the contract of Anthony Gerrard. His contract was terminated for gross misconduct arising from certain social media posts which brought the club into disrepute.
"In accordance with Anthony Gerrard's contract and Football League procedure, he had 14 days to appeal the decision, no appeal was lodged. As a result his contract with the club has now ended."
Gerrard didn't have to wait long for another opportunity in League Two to come along though - he's signed a deal with Carlisle until the January transfer window opens.
The Cumbrians actually announced his arrival before Oldham had confirmed his departure from the club.
Gerrard made a total of 69 appearances for Oldham, including 37 in all competitions last season.
