Newcastle United have unveiled a £250,000 statue in honour of club legend Alan Shearer outside St James' Park.

The statue was paid for by the family of former chairman Freddy Shepherd, hailing him as an all-time great; "Alan was one of the greatest players ever to wear a Newcastle shirt."

The statue is situated outside the Milburn Stand of the ground while depicting the 46-year-old's famous goal celebration created by Northumberland artist Tom Maley.

Shearer joined Newcastle in 1996 for a then-record breaking £15 million from Blackburn Rovers compiling 405 appearances while bagging a whopping 206 goals during his 10 year spell.

As well as experiencing a spell as manager in 2009 though relegated the Magpies after taking the helm late in the season in April. The legendary No.9's career is finally recognised as he is immortalized in bronze.

The now BBC pundit is one of the faces of Match of the Day.
