Manchester United have accepted the fact that Paul Pogba may choose to leave the club on a free transfer next summer, as contract talks with the Frenchman stall.

A number of clubs around Europe are thought to be interested in signing him, with the player's notorious agent, Mino Raiola, central to any future more - or indeed contract renewal.

United have been trying to tie Pogba down to a new deal for months, and following a strong start to the new campaign, things were looking positive on that front.

However, a recent downturn in results under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, alongside Pogba being actively dropped for big matches, has completed changed the situation.

ESPN now reports that the club's board have come to terms with the fact that the World Cup winner may simply choose to depart on a free transfer next summer, and instead sign for one of Europe's super clubs.

The likes of Real Madrid and PSG have both been heavily linked with the 28-year-old, as indeed have former club Juventus, who could be in need of a new midfielder if Aaron Ramsey returns to the Premier League in the coming months.

According to the report, United will not attempt to try and get a fee for their superstar asset by selling him in January, as they instead wish to keep hold of him for the duration of the season.

When asked about Pogba's future this week, the midfielder's agent, Mino Raiola, said: "You would have to ask Manchester United about it. At this moment everything is calm. There is no update."

Pogba was a notable absentee from the Red Devils' two most recent starting XI's against Atalanta and Liverpool.

After United's 3-2 win over Atalanta last week, where the Frenchman started from the bench, former player-turned pundit Paul Scholes went so far as to suggest that he wouldn't be missed by the club.

"You'd have to think, if Ole's still a manager there, will we see Paul Pogba again in a United shirt?" Scholes claimed on BT Sport.

"He's caused mayhem over the last couple of years. Everybody knows what a talent he is, everybody trusts him, every manager trusts him, tried to give him his head and let him be the player he's been."
