Rio Ferdinand has appeared to drop a major hint at what shirt number Cristiano Ronaldo will don following his sensational return to Manchester United.

Ronaldo has agreed terms with Man United ahead of completing his blockbuster summer transfer.

He's set to undergo a medical in Lisbon before linking up with Portugal for their international fixtures.

But what shirt number will Ronaldo wear for the 2021/22 season?

Well, the Old Trafford legend could reclaim his famous number seven shirt.

That's according to Ferdinand who seemed to claim that Edinson Cavani - the current holder of the number seven shirt - has given it to Ronaldo.

While Premier League rules state a player is not allowed to switch shirt numbers during a season, a loophole could see the 36-year-old sport the number seven shirt as the Uruguayan has yet to feature this campaign.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Man United defender revealed: "Just to think Cavani could be the back-up for Ronaldo, it's unbelievable.

"Cavani, I have to say, what a man. He saw who was coming to town and gave up the No.7 shirt."

He added: "Maybe? I don't know. Does he do that or not? At the end of the day, you know what the problem might be is that the shirts have been registered, maybe.

"And that might be an issue. So, he might not be able to be No.7 so we'll see."

Of course, Ronaldo wore the iconic number seven shirt during his incredible first spell at the club.

Whatever number he ends up getting, though, will sell like hotcakes in stores.
