Jose Mourinho's biggest job at Old Trafford this summer might not be deciding who he brings into his Manchester United team for next season but who he lets go from Louis van Gaal's squad. One such player looks to be staying.
All in all LvG hasn't left his former protege with a bad squad at Old Trafford but there are some big decisions to be made about fringe players and some first team players, especially Juan Mata.
However one player who many might have thought was under threat looks to be staying with the 'Special One' reportedly telling English centre-back Phil Jones that his future at the club is assured.
Chris Smalling has overtaken Jones in the pecking order by a long way over the last two years with the former Blackburn Rovers defender being frustrated by injury, form and an inability to hold down one position with his versatility becoming more hindrance than help.

However despite Mourinho signing Eric Bailly from Villarreal already this summer it looks like Jones does have a future at Old Trafford which will come as a relief to a player once described as having the potential to be the club's best ever player by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Last season the 24 year old made just 13 appearances for the Red Devils because of form and injury which meant he missed out on England's Euro 2016 squad.
