Jordan Henderson joked about a "bending lines" conspiracy after his last-gasp goal vs Everton was ruled out.

The Liverpool skipper thought he had snatched a 3-2 win for the Premier League champions in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

However, Sadio Mane was deemed to have been in an offside position and so VAR chalked the goal off after an incredibly close call, with the pulsating affair ending 2-2.

It was Mane's elbow that was said to have been just offside, despite looking like he had timed his run well on first viewing.

And Henderson offered a comical explanation for why the strike did not stand when asked about it post-match.

"I think they bend the line sometimes to make it offside," Henderson told Des Kelly from BT Sport, cracking a smile as he said it.

"I'm not sure how they do it and I've seen it before. But not just that goal, the overall performance, the chances we created, I think we deserved to win the game. From start to finish I think we were the better team and I think Everton will be happier with the draw."

Henderson's disallowed goal came just a few minutes after Richarlison was sent off for a horror challenge on Thiago Alcantara, following up Jordan Pickford's shocking tackle on Virgil van Dijk that went unpunished in the first half.

Pickford charged out of his box and collided with van Dijk in a scissors motion, who had to be replaced by Joe Gomez.

While the challenge could quite easily have been worthy of a red card, the fact that Dutch defender Van Dijk was penalised for offside by his arm in the initial phase of play meant Pickford didn't even receive a caution.
