The goal came a minute after Iniesta had been replaced by Andre Gomes and he was visibly emotional on the bench as well his post-match interview.

Holding back tears, he told it TV3 it may well be his last game in Europe's premier competition.

"That is a possibility and for that reason it hurts even more," the Barca skipper said, as per Sky Sports.

"It's a very hurtful elimination because nobody expected it due to the lead we had.

"It's a big disappointment because of the season we were having. It's difficult to take this elimination because we had a lot of hope and it has escaped."

The 33-year old, who signed a lifetime contract at the club, has been heavily linked with a move to the Chinese Super League but has yet to make a definitive decision on his future. According to journalist Graham Hunter, he has until the end of this month to make his mind up on whether he will stay on.

Iniesta has won the Champions League on four occasions and will go down as one of the greatest players to play in the competition.
