Stevenage FC became the most used club in FIFA 20 Career Mode thanks to a genius marketing campaign.

Fast food giants Burger King reportedly paid around £50,000 to sponsor the shirts of the Hertfordshire outfit in 2019 in a move that no doubt raised an eyebrow or two.

But it was a decision that brought a whole host of benefits for all parties, when they enlisted the creative assistance of 'DAVID The Agency'.

Their thinking was that they would use FIFA 20 to get more eyes onto the Boro by introducing a number of 'Stevenage Challenges' such as 'A Nutmeg for Nuggets' and 'Impossible for Impossible Whopper' that would result in rewards.

Gamers, who were sometimes wearing official Stevenage shirts, would tweet videos of them completing these challenges and in return received free food delivered to their doorstep.

A total of 25,000 goals were shared online across the week-long campaign and Stevenage went on to become the most popular team on FIFA 20 when it came to Career Mode and Twitch streams.

For a club with a stadium that holds a capacity of 2,700, incredibly, the campaign reached far and wide in countries like USA, Brazil, China, Germany and was an overwhelming success.

Perhaps the best measurement of that is the fact that for the first time in their history, all Stevenage shirts were sold out in next to no time.

The Stevenage x Burger King link up runs until the end of the 2020/21 campaign and we're hoping they can cook up something special once again.

On the basis of one of their most recent stunts, they've still got some marketing magical to sprinkle.

Costa Rican footballer Jonathan McDonald hit headlines in June when he had 'Burger King' above his No.19 squad number during top of the league clash between Alajuelense and Saprissa.

What a whopper...
