'Pro Evolution Soccer 2' Voted The Greatest Football Game Ever

What a game.

Japan may have been the only fully licensed team in Pro Evolution 2, but this 2002 classic will go down as one of the greatest and most influential football games in recent memory.

In fact, the universally acclaimed masterpiece has been voted as the best PlayStation football game of all time, according to Ranker.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2 was produced by Konami and was first released in April, 2002 in Japan before making its way to Europe six months later. It was originally released for PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube.

Not only did the classic theme tune of Queen, We Will Rock You entertain us on a daily basis, but Pro Evolution Soccer's second instalment included some of the greatest commentary we've ever heard.

Peter Brackley, who was perhaps most famous for covering Football Italia back in the 90's, supplies us with this marvellous commentary.

Brackley also provided us with the commentary for another classic, Michael Owen's World League Soccer '99 but his line from Pro Evolution Soccer 2 will forever be remembered:

The game received a rating of 94 on Metacritic, with the following summary describing the release perfectly:

"The Players choice of soccer games, this new version has improved graphics, awesome player movements and is simply the best re-creation of the beautiful game to date."

When reviewing the game, one user said: "I've been playing footie games now for the best part of 15 years. I've played them all but Pro Evolution Soccer is quite simply the most sublime, realistic game of football there has ever been."

Another wrote: "It's an incredible system that only gets better with repeated play. Every aspect of control is duly handed to the player."

FIFA street 2, which was released in 2006, came in second place in the all time football game list while World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 came in third.

Perhaps my favourite release of all time, the 2002 FIFA World Cup, was voted in fourth place ahead of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, the original FIFA Street and FIFA 2001.
