I certainly didn't expect to be writing about a goal scored by a referee on this fine Monday in Manchester, but here we are. Don't you just love football?

As you can see in the below footage, the official unintentionally scores with a rebounded header to make it 4:2 after the LFC Manas player misses from the spot.

Sign him up, Jose.

It looks like the referee, Atay Daudov, was injured after the incident but according to LFL's official YouTube channel, the goal actually stood.

The Russian Amateur League posted this incredible clip on their social channels today. i mean, just look at the reactions from both sets of players.

Incredible scenes in Makhachkala.

KizDD, the team who missed the penalty, went on to score twice to pick up a deserved point in the tie.

But the referee grabbed all the headlines with this rather bizarre incident. Have you ever seen anything like it before?

It got us thinking, what are the greatest referee moments? From real life to the gaming scene, forget VAR and goal line technology, what we really need in football is the referee only being allowed to book a player if he can catch up to him.

That's what happened on FIFA 94.

The latest editions of the games are great, to the point that sometimes it's difficult to work out what's a video of real life and what's a video of FIFA, but those early versions will always be the best.

And in case you're wondering why, in FIFA 94 you could literally spend time running away from a referee who was trying to book you:

Long live the referee!
