God bless Wayne Rooney. The England and Manchester United captain just wanted to send his best wishes to his Irish friends on St. Patrick's Day and it's backfired spectacularly.

Rooney took to Instagram to post a picture of himself with John O'Shea and Jonny Evans holding the Premier League trophy alongside the caption 'Celebrating with my mates. Happy St. Patrick's Day' followed by a thumbs up, a shamrock and... THE IVORY COAST FLAG.

In defence of the former Everton striker, the colours of the Ivory Coast's flag are identical to those of the Republic of Ireland's. However, they're arranged in the opposite fashion and we have a hard time imagining much Guinness is being supped in celebration in the homeland of Didier Drogba and the Toure brothers today.

As we all know, Rooney is always good value on social media, so here is a selection of his finest tweets.
