FIFA To Test New Extra Time Rule In Olympics

FIFA To Test New Extra Time Rule In Olympics

Interesting idea.

First there was the quirky Golden Goal, then that was changed to the even odder but probably fairer Silver Goal rule and then we just went back to normal extra time just because it makes more sense. Now FIFA are going to try something else to change extra time.

The sport's governing body will test out a new rule this summer at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, a perfect time to test silly new innovations to the rules of the game.

During the under 23s, with two older players, tournament FIFA will test the use of a fourth substitute in extra time. It's a good idea to reduce the chance of injuries during the extra half an hour.

Of course the extra sub could also be used tactically to bring on an extra penalty taker especially late on in the added half an hour of football. However the best use of it will to stop the farce of numerous players going down with cramp.

If the move is successful it could be further trialed at the Women's Under 20 World Cup and Club World Championships later this year.
