Premier League clubs could be allowed to make five substitutions in a game, when football is allowed to return, after FIFA proposed a temporary change to the laws for the end of the season.

If football is able to return in the near future then it's likely they'll be a bit of a rush to get the final 92 games remaining in the Premier League season finished.

Teams will be playing twice a week for several weeks to get all the games in and in order to fight off the increased chances of injury FIFA have proposed the new law.

"When competitions resume, such competitions are likely to face a congested match calendar with a higher-than-normal frequency of matches played in consecutive weeks," a FIFA spokesperson said.

"Safety of the players is one of FIFA's main priority then. One concern in this regard is that the higher-than-normal frequency of matches may increase the risk of potential injuries due to a resulting player overload.

"In light of this and in light of the unique challenge faced globally in delivering competitions according to the originally foreseen calendar, FIFA proposes that a larger number of substitutions be temporarily allowed at the discretion of the relevant competition organiser.

"In competitions where less than five substitutions are currently allowed, each team would now be given the possibility to use up to five substitutions during the match, with the possibility of an additional substitution remaining during extra time, where relevant."

The law change is still pending the agreement of International Football Association Board, which decide on the games' laws, and after that it would be down to each league to decide on the changes.

Premier League clubs would likely have to vote on the change, that would also last through the 2020/21 season and in international games until December 2021, with 14 of the clubs needing to vote in favour of the change for it to through.

The Bundesliga looks set to return at the beginning of May, with clubs having already returned to training, but England is still behind Germany in terms of coming out of lockdown.

On Monday it was reported that the Premier League has come up with a plan to return to action on June 8th, with clubs returning to training in mid May.

Games would likely be played in just several stadiums to limit the spread of disease and the impact on resources.

The government has also called for football to get back up and running, in order to give a lift to the nation, just weeks after they criticised footballers for not taking wage cuts.
