Steven Gerrard has been spared the turmoil of missing Liverpool playing in a cup final by his LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena, who has agreed to rearrange the club's flight to Mexico so the ex-Liverpool skipper can enjoy the Capital One Cup final from the comfort of his own home.

Galaxy are due to play Mexican side Santos Laguna in the second leg of a CONCACAF Champions League tie and Gerrard was due to be flying to Mexico with his teammates instead of watching the Reds potentially lift their first bit of silverware in four years.

Writing in his column in The Telegraph, Gerrard conceded that it will be an odd experience for him watching Liverpool in a cup final, rather than playing in it for them:

"I cannot deny it. Part of me wishes I was out there with them and it will feel strange watching Liverpool in a final on television in America.

"When I talk about Liverpool I still find myself talking about what 'we' can do. I have to thank my manager Bruce Arena for allowing me to see the game at all. When Liverpool reached the final the first thing I did was check our fixture list, hoping to get to Wembley.

"Like with every Liverpool match this season, I will be watching but trying to kick every ball. I will feel like I have played."
