When the teacher said in class one person was ruining it for the rest of you it was rarely about £500,000 but that's exactly what's happened to Sam Allardyce ahead of his appointment as England manager.
Allardyce is the latest in a long time of managers coming into the England job after the last man has messed up. Like Sven Goran Eriksson, Steve MccLaren, Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson before him Big Sam is getting the job after failure.
The Sunderland manager, who has been waiting for the national team job for around 10 years when McClaren got the job ahead of him, is on the verge of becoming the boss but after Hodgson's failure the new man will 'only' be earning £2.5 million a year, a loss of £500k on the previous incumbent.
Hodgson was given a four year deal when he signed just before the 2012 Euros and again the FA seem to have learnt from their mistakes, they should have sacked Hodgson after the 2014 failings, and have only offered Allardyce a two year deal with a further two year option.
Advert
Of course Allardyce's contract will still make him the most well paid national team manager in the world and should he actually be successful then because of bonuses he could end up earning more than his predecessor.
Will Big Sam be a success?
