Benfica's Nicolas Otamendi Shown Red Card For After Ridiculous Playacting

Benfica's Nicolas Otamendi Shown Red Card For After Ridiculous Playacting

This took it to a whole new level from the former Manchester City defender.

Nicolas Otamendi was shown a red card for catching Luis Diaz in the face in Benfica's 3-0 Portuguese Cup defeat to FC Porto last night, but that only tells part of the story.

Despite being the protagonist in the challenge, he hilariously clutches his face and slumps down onto the pitch at almost the same time as Diaz.

It is a shameless piece of playacting from the Argentine, which thankfully didn't fool the referee and was subsequently shown his marching orders.

The incident took place in stoppage time with the Eagles already 3-0 down, meaning it had no effect on the outcome of the match, which saw Porto reach the quarter-finals.

Otamendi has been a regular in Jorge Jesus' side this season, making 23 appearances across all competitions for the Lisbon side.

He joined the Portuguese side from Manchester City in a £13.7million deal in September 2020, after winning two Premier League titles, four League Cups and the FA Cup during five years at the Etihad Stadium.

But his focus is now on the Eagles, who currently sit third in the Portuguese Primeira Liga table with 37 points from 15 games - four adrift of Porto.

The two clubs are set to face each other again on 30th December in what will be a mouth-watering league fixture at the Estádio do Dragão.

Let's hope there aren't any more histrionics from Otamendi in the next match.
