Arsenal To Hand Wenger A New Deal To Fend Off England Interest

It's been twenty years since Wenger took the reins at Arsenal.

Arsenal are set to give Arsene Wenger a new deal in the hope of quashing interest from England, reports The Mirror.

The FA are searching for a new manager following the sacking of Sam Allardyce, who lasted just 67 days in charge before he was caught up in the Telegraph's investigation into corruption in football.

Former Middlesbrough boss and current England Under 21 manager Gareth Southgate has been placed in temporary charge and will be in the dugout for the next four England fixtures.

However, Wenger appears to be the first-choice for the FA. He was reportedly courted by England in the summer after the resignation of Roy Hodgson following the dismal showing at Euro 2016 but remained committed to the project at Arsenal and so Allardyce was appointed.

The Frenchman has just less than a year remaining on his current contract but it is understood that Arsenal wish to hold contract negotiations over the course of this season, with the aim of tying the former Monaco boss down to a new two-year deal.

England's alternatives include Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe and former Spurs striker and now USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann, while the bookies fancy Alan Pardew to be showing off his appalling dance moves at Wembley once again.

What do Arsenal fans make of the news that Wenger is set to stay? Is that a step forwards or backwards? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
