Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata has revealed that Chelsea tried to sign him in the summer, in a deal that would have made him the most expensive Spanish player.

The 23-year old was in popular demand in the summer, with both Chelsea and Arsenal in for him. But he eventually returned to the Bernabeu as Madrid activated their £34 million buy-back clause that was put in place when Morata joined Juventus in 2014.

Morata says that Antonio Conte and Chelsea were very much interested in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to Sport BILD, he said:

"Chelsea showed the most interest, Antonio Conte had already signed me for Juventus. And it was a very good offer this time. I would have been the most expensive Spanish player ever."

The Spaniard later said that Chelsea had offered "roughly €70m" but he had his heart side on returning to Real Madrid and tussling for a first-team place there.

Chelsea found their alternative in Marseille's Michy Batshuayi, who joined the club in a £33m deal.
