He may be enjoying his most productive season in a Liverpool shirt so far, but the moment that people will remember the most from Adam Lallana's 2016/17 campaign will be his horrendous miss against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The two team's played out one of the most entertaining 1-1 draws in Premier League history on Sunday evening, with both sides guilty of missing a plethora of sitters.

None of the missed chances have received the same repeated airings as Lallana's, though, which even fooled Roberto Firmino, who was convinced his teammate had restored Liverpool's lead.

Now, the former Southampton midfielder has revealed how he managed to miss the opportunity and what he said to the rest of the team in the changing room, after the full time whistle.

"I might have just taken my eyes off the ball for a second and got excited.

"I'm absolutely gutted. It could have proven to be the winner and it was a big moment in the game. I'm so disappointed with it.

"Me being me, I went into the dressing room and said sorry to them all. That's the way I felt. I put my hands up. To not hit the target, it was a chance I should have hit the target with and probably should have scored. I felt if we got the second, we would have put the game to bed.

"I apologised for not hitting the target but the lads were fine. It's one of those things, isn't it? They happen sometimes."

Lallana has already equalled his most prolific season in a Liverpool shirt, this term, scoring seven goals in 28 games. He hit the same number last season, but they came in 49 appearances. The England international has also laid on another seven goals for his teammates.

Given his fine form, this season, Liverpool fans will likely forgive Lallana for the miss.
