Rumours are already swirling around about who will replace Aitor Karanka as Middlesbrough manager, following the Spanish coach's sacking by the Teesside club, earlier today.

One name that jumps off the page is surprisingly the early frontrunner to get the job, former PSV, Russia, Netherlands and interim Chelsea boss, Guus Hiddink.

The 70-year-old has been out of work since overseeing the second half of the 2015/16 season in his second stint as interim boss at Stamford Bridge, but could be set for another return to the Premier League as 'Boro aim to steer themselves out of the relegation zone.

Middlesbrough are without a win in their last 10 games and are three points from safety, lying in 19th place in the league table.

The Telegraph are reporting that Hiddink would be keen on taking on the challenge of securing 'Boro's Premier League status but is also facing competition for the role from several other candidates.

Former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson is also believed to be in the running, as are Roy Hodgson, Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren, who famously led Middlesbrough to their only major trophy in 2004 as well as the 2006 UEFA Cup final.

Assistant head coach Steve Agnew is currently in temporary charge and will manage 'Boro in their game against Manchester United at the Riverside Stadium, this Sunday.

While Hiddink has a long list of accolades to his name, including six Eredivisie titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup, he's also struggled in some of his most recent roles, being fired from his position as Netherlands boss midway through a disastrous Euro 2016 qualification campaign and failing to guide Turkey to Euro 2012, before that.

However, it will be Hiddink's successes with PSV Eindhoven and, most notably at international level where he guided South Korea to the 2002 World Cup semi-finals, Australia to the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals and Russia to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 that the Middlesbrough board will be hoping the Dutchman can emulate should they hire him for the vacant manager's job.

Is Hiddink the man to save 'Boro from relegation? If not, then who is?
