As Mexico secured its perfect record in the World Cup 2026 group stage, the host nation gave a special appearance to the soon-to-be-retired icon Guillermo Ochoa, but his significant milestone wasn't enough for a special FIFA token.
Mexico's opening two wins in their opening World Cup fixtures allowed for a rotated squad as they lined up against the Czech Republic, and even with a second-string team, they went 2-0 up in front of the home support, securing top spot in Group A and an 'easier' fixture against a third-place team in the Round of 32.
Within the space of three second-half minutes, Mexico rolled out the red carpet for its new era and its icons, substituting off 17-year-old wonderkid Gilberto Mora just before the legendary Ochoa took to the pitch.
Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa hoisted by teammates after milestone appearance
The Mexican superstar was met with a chorus of applause from each seat in the Azteca arena, marking what is likely to be his final appearance in football.
Without a shot to save, as Mexico eased past Czechia 3-0, the iconic goalkeeper was paraded by his teammates in an emotional celebration after the final whistle.

The appearance wasn't just a personal milestone, though, as it moved Ochoa into esteemed company in accolades that honoured his longevity.
A handful of heroes at the 2026 World Cup, such as Manuel Neuer and Yūto Nagatomo, and Cristiano Ronaldo were given a special patch on their sleeves that commemorates the rare achievement of playing in six World Cups.
However, Ochoa didn't receive one despite travelling to his sixth global tournament.
The Mexican began his 20-year international tournament saga in Germany 2006 as the third-choice keeper but didn't play. Despite being evergreen in the squad since, earning 151 national caps, he won't be recognised in the same ilk as the other long-standing World Cup stars.
However, his cult-hero status is better than a badge on his arm.
The goalkeeper certainly enjoyed his outing too, breaking down in tears after the game, just as Neymar did just two hours prior.
At the grand age of 40 years and 347 days, Ochoa became the sixth-oldest player to ever feature at the World Cup, coming in above Luke Modric and below Cristiano Ronaldo, who both made new entries into the top ten with their appearances this month.
Only Pat Jennings, Ronaldo, Roger Milla, Faryd Mondragon, and Essam El Hadary have featured in the World Cup at a more experienced age than the Mexico keeper.
Mexico's journey at the World Cup is far from over, though, and it might not be the last time we do see Ochoa, although he won't be getting the number one jersey back any time soon.
Between the sticks, Raul Rangel will likely retain his spot, as Mexico starts its underdog surge through the World Cup knockouts.
If all goes to plan for both Mexico, it seems likely that they will face England in the Round of 16, played in Mexico City, with the winning nation moving to a potential Quarter-Final match-up with Brazil or Norway.
