The visitors went into the break two goals up thanks to a Pascal Gross brace.

The hosts pulled one back through an own-goal by Alexis Mac Allister, but were unable to find an all-important equaliser.

Man United weren't at the races, with their midfield exposed and fans singled out McTominay, who failed to get going in the middle of the park.

He was lucky to avoid a red card following his reckless tackle on Moises Caicedo, as Ten Hag eventually dragged him off in the 77th minute.

Man United fans made their feelings known over McTominay's lacklustre performance on social media.

Speaking after Man United's 2-1 defeat to Brighton, Roy Keane called out McTominay - claiming he's not 'good enough'.

"Fred and McTominay, not good enough," he said on Sky Sports. "They won't get Man United competing at the top."

The Red Devils resume their league campaign next Saturday when they face Brentford.
