Marcus Edwards produced a moment of magic as he nearly scored a Champions League goal of the season contender against Tottenham.

The 23-year-old Englishman, who started his career at Spurs, lit up Sporting CP's European clash just before the break.

He went on a dazzling run, skipping past several opposition players to create an opening.

Edwards shrugged off Eric Dier then danced his way past Ivan Perisic before setting up Francisco Trincao.

The talented attacker then got the ball back and appeared destined to score after his insane solo run.

But Hugo Lloris kept his effort out as Edwards couldn't believe his luck.

Edwards' run impressed Jamie Carragher and many fans on online.

One Twitter user wrote: "Wish he finished that. Would of been some goal that."

A second tweeted: "Straight into the greatest goals that never were comp."

A third added: "Marcus Edwards moving like Saka and Lionel Messi."

Former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino showed Edwards with high praise during his time at the Premier League club.

The Argentine boss compared him to Lionel Messi.

"His qualities, it's only looks, his body and the way that he plays, remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi," he said.

Edwards has been at Sporting CP since January 2022 and has starred for the Portuguese club.
