Marcelo Bielsa is on the verge of taking his first job in international football since 2011 after weeks of negotiations – and fans think it is the perfect appointment.

The 67-year-old, who has been out of work since February 2022 after Leeds decided to part ways with the Argentine following a poor run of form, has been linked with numerous vacancies in recent months.

He was heavily rumoured to be in the running for the Everton job before Sean Dyche was appointed in January, and Bournemouth were also said to be keen on snapping him up last year.

But it appears Bielsa will become the next Uruguay manager. In fact, TYC journalist César Luis Merlo says an agreement is already complete and is expected to be made official in the next few days.

It is believed Bielsa will sign a contract until the end of the upcoming qualifiers with the chance to extend his deal if he qualifies for the World Cup.

Talks have taken place between the former Athletic Bilbao, Lazio and Marseille manager in the last two weeks, according to Fabrizio Romano, who also suggests Uruguay are 'finally' closing in on the appointment.

This will be Bielsa's first venture into international football since 2011, when he spent four years in charge of the Chile national team.

In recent hours, fans have expressed their excitement at the prospect of Bielsa managing the likes of Federico Valverde, Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez, to name just a few.

One fan said: "South American World Cup qualification is already a must watch but news that Uruguay are set to appoint Marcelo Bielsa manages to turn up the excitement levels further."

A second wrote: "Marcelo Bielsa to be Uruguay’s next coach. Going to be interesting how their talent will thrive under him. Darwin Nunez in particular."

A third commented: "Not quite official yet, but it looks more than likely that Marcelo Bielsa is Uruguay's next coach. I'm very, very much looking forward to this."

A fourth added: "Something about this just screams match made in heaven. All I want is to see Nunez, Valverde and Ugarte fly around for Bielsa before returning home to Kirby."

I am so so looking forward to watching Bielsa’s 3-3-1-3 for Uruguay with these players, I think it can take South America by storm.

Especially De Arrascaeta, him in that space as enganche under Bielsa would be insane. pic.twitter.com/5mV0kchVTh
