Manchester United need to sell players this summer to raise transfer funds - but the club has an extremely poor record of recouping money on unwanted squad members.

ESPN claim United have a transfer budget of between £100m and £150m, which is unlikely to be enough to secure all of the players wanted by manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is keen to sign new striker, with Tottenham forward Harry Kane top of his list.

Spurs are demanding at least £100m for Kane, despite him having just one year left on his current deal.

United are also in talks to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea and had a bid of around £50m rejected on Wednesday by the London club, who are holding out for more than £60m.

United are also interested in signing West Ham captain Declan Rice - who cost more than £100m this summer, with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea also in the hunt for the midfielder.

United's modest transfer budget could be boosted by player sales but the Old Trafford club have a poor record of selling players, particularly since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as manager in 2013.

A new post on Reddit has compiled a list of the top 10 biggest sales in the post-Fergie era using figures from Transfermarkt, and it is not happy reading for United supporters.

The biggest sale to take place in recent years is Romelu Lukaku's move from United to Inter Milan in 2019 for €74m (£63.5m).

That is then followed by the sale of Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain in 2014 for €63m (£54m).

There is then a steep drop to the next biggest sale in the post-Ferguson era, with Daniel James' €29m (£25m) move to Leeds United in 2021 third on the list.

The thread claims that in 10 years since Ferguson stepped down as manager, United have managed to raise just €398.4m (£342m) through the sale of players.

To put that into perspective, United's rivals Manchester City raised €162.1m (£139m) last summer alone.

United must find a way to improve their record with Ten Hag is need of reinforcements with their main rivals all strengthening their squads.

A number of players could be sold to raise funds this summer including captain Harry Maguire, Dean Henderson, Fred, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay.
