Manchester United have held a meeting with Jeremie Frimpong’s agent, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

United continue to fight on three fronts this term. Having already claimed the Carabao Cup in February - their first trophy in six years - Erik ten Hag's men are in the latter stages of the Europa League and FA Cup, while they are hoping to secure Champions League football next season.

Nevertheless, the club already have one eye on the summer transfer window and next season.

United have been tipped to sign a new striker as a long-term replacement for the departed Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, right-back is also a position United are reportedly looking to strengthen. The Premier League giants are thought to be in pursuit of Frimpong - a Bayer Leverkusen full-back that has claimed some eight goals and five assists in the Bundesliga this term.

And Romano has provided an update on the club's pursuit of the 22-year-old.

Frimpong to Man Utd?

Speaking to the United’s Stand’s Youtube channel the Italian journalist said: “It’s important to say that from what I understand there was a meeting between the agent of Jeremie Frimpong and Manchester United.

“Man Utd have confirmed their interest in the player. As you say it is something that United have been interested in since October, and November.

"They’ve sent their scouts multiple times to follow Jeremie Frimpong who’s doing very well with Bayer Leverkusen.

"They feel he has different skills than the other right-backs they have in the squad and this is why they are monitoring him.

"He's very young, he would love to move to the Premier League - this is an important point. So Frimpong would give priority to Manchester United and the Premier League in general.

"The other opportunities he has at the moment are - his agent met with Bayern [Munich], but they are still slow because they have Joao Cancelo. They have to make a decision on Joao Cancelo in the next weeks and months.

"He also [has interest] from Barcelona but we don't know the financial situation of Barcelona so they're waiting on financial fair play, before deciding anything.

"This is why for Manchester United it could be an opportunity. The meeting was positive. It's one of the names they have on their list.

"For sure the player would be happy about the move. Now it's on United to see if they will receive a proposal for [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka. My feeling is if a bid comes in for Wan-Bissaka there is a concrete possibility of him leaving and for United to go for Frimpong as a future option to create competition for Dalot, who is in talks to extend his contract."

Last weekend Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso insisted Frimpong is not letting reported interest in his services affect his performances.

In a press conference, when asked about the speculation surrounding Frimpong's future, Alonso said: "What happens next season is not an issue for me.

"Rumours are normal in football. 'Jerry' is a special player, who has played very well and scored eight goals in the Bundesliga. So it's normal. I talk to him a lot and he is 100 per cent focused on Bayer Leverkusen.

"If it wasn't like that, I would talk to him. But it's not a problem for anyone. He has the hunger to improve and help the team."
