Report names the four Man Utd stars who could be sold with the club needing to 'sell to buy' this summer

Manchester United could move on four players this summer as part of a 'sell to buy' approach, according to a new report.

Manchester United could move on four players this summer as part of a 'sell to buy' approach, according to a new report.

Erik ten Hag's side are currently in superb form, having won each of their last eight games in all competitions ahead of Saturday's Manchester derby against Manchester City.

They currently occupy fourth position in the Premier League, and a positive result against the Cityzens would place another marker on how far they have progressed since the Dutchman took charge after the conclusion of the 2021/22 season.

United will, however, need to achieve success this season largely with their current group of players, with transfer funds for the window believed to be low.

However, they have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley until the end of the season, and will pay his current loan club Besiktas a £2.5 million compensation fee, according to The Athletic.

Looking ahead to the summer, Ten Hag will surely hope to have more resources available to him in order to help to push United to the next level. But he may have to move some players on first.

United could sell four players in summer

The Telegraph claim that Ten Hag's side must qualify for the Champions League to spend big this summer due to new UEFA Financial Sustainability rules, coupled with fees over £300 million that United already owe for previous transfers.

The same report also says that the manager will need to make a decision on players who could leave Old Trafford, naming Harry Maguire, Fred, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek.

United also have a number of players who are out of contract in the summer, including David de Gea, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones. The club are reportedly in talks with the Spaniard over a new deal, whilst Tuanzebe and Jones have not featured in a matchday squad since Ten Hag's appointment due to a mixture of injury, in Tuanzebe's case, and non-selection.

But it appears that selling players, coupled with a top four finish, will be vital to ensuring that the Dutchman can bolster his squad in the way he wants to ahead of next season.
