"They need to buy..." - Man Utd legend names the one player the club must sign as "funny vibe" claim made

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has told his former club the one player they need to sign in the upcoming transfer window.

United have only completed two pieces of incoming business in January, with forward Wout Weghorst joining on loan from Burnley and goalkeeper Jack Butland arriving on loan from Crystal Palace.

Erik ten Hag's side did, however, make several key additions in the summer, with Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Antony moving to Old Trafford for a combined fee of £200 million.

That has meant the budget is low for January, with Financial Fair Play (FFP) compliance also said to be factor in how much United can spend this month. Players will likely need to be sold to make room for new additions.

However, the Red Devils have still been linked with a number of players, including Lyon right-back Malo Gusto, who is also a target for Chelsea.

Director of football John Murtough recently confirmed that the upcoming summer window was the key priority for the club and Ten Hag - and Sheringham has stated who United should be targeting.

Sheringham on Man Utd transfers

The 56-year-old, who made over 100 appearances for the club under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1997 and 2001 and won the Champions League, has advised United to sign a player from another of his former clubs.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "If Manchester United want to move forward, they need to buy Harry Kane. He would be the perfect solution and I've got a funny vibe that them signing Weghorst until the end of the season is just that little stop-gap, just putting in a centre forward.

"But if you're going that extra step you've got to buy the best players, and Manchester United have always done that. Harry is still the best centre forward, along with [Erling] Haaland, to get.

"You're not going to get Haaland, so go and get Harry. He will lead the line, he will be professional, he will be focused, he will drag players along with him and he will make your club a better club, without a doubt.

"I've said that about other players like Declan Rice, and upset West Ham fans. West Ham need to keep Declan Rice, but other teams looking to make their clubs bigger and stronger and better need to sign players like him, and these players don't come along often, so you need to get them when they're up to grabs."
