"The original plan was..." - Romano claims Man Utd are considering major change in transfer strategy

"The original plan was..." - Romano claims Man Utd are considering major change in transfer strategy

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Man Utd are planning a major change in their transfer strategy ahead of the January transfer window.

Prominent journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United are planning a major change in their transfer strategy as the January window approaches.

Erik ten Hag's side spent big on established players in the summer, with a combined outlay of over £200 million on Casemiro, Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

They also brought in former Tottenham star Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, and loaned in Martin Dubravka from Newcastle for extra goalkeeping depth.

All the above players, bar Dubravka, have seen substantial amounts of gametime, and have helped United to fifth place in the Premier League. They are one point off the top four with a game in hand on Spurs, who are in fourth.

But fans are still concerned about a lack of depth in some areas, particularly up front. That is following Cristiano Ronaldo's exit from the club by mutual agreement in November.

Romano has revealed that United do want to sign a striker in January - but their overall strategy over signings is set to be different to what it was in the summer.

Romano reveals potential Man Utd transfer strategy change

The transfer journalist has claimed that the potential sale of the club by the Glazer family may impact on what United can spend in January.

Romano told GiveMeSport: "The original plan was to continue with the same squad until the end of the season and maybe to sign a right-back, but nothing big in January after investing big money in Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony during the summer.

"But now they are deciding internally, also with the process for the Glazers to sell the club as soon as possible, how much they want to spend on a striker."

United missed out on the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV, with Liverpool signing the 23-year-old for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £38 million.

One option for Ten Hag could be to sign Joao Felix on a loan deal, with claiming that they, along with Premier League leaders Arsenal, are 'best-placed' to bring him in on a temporary arrangement from Atletico Madrid in January.
