Manager reveals asking price for key Man Utd target after he turns down new contract

Man Utd have been handed a fresh boost in pursuit of a key transfer target.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has revealed the club's asking price for Manchester United target David Raya after he rejected two contract offers.

Raya has been heavily linked with United in recent months, with the club exploring options to bolster their goalkeeping department.

The Guardian claimed last month that Erik ten Hag's side were eyeing Raya as a potential replacement for David de Gea, whose contract expires this summer. United are said to want De Gea to take a pay cut in order to stay at Old Trafford, as he is one of the club's highest earners.

If De Gea does not agree to fresh terms, it is likely that United will allow him to leave on a free transfer after 12 years of service.

And they could replace him with his fellow compatriot, who has overhauled De Gea to become part of the Spain senior squad on a regular basis in recent years.

At 27, Raya now has almost two seasons of Premier League experience under his belt, having helped Brentford to promotion from the Championship in 2021.

A good shot-stopper and an excellent distributor, Raya would be a perfect fit for Ten Hag's style, and a new long-term number one for the club.

And United were given a boost yesterday, with news that the goalkeeper, whose Brentford deal expires in the summer of 2024, had turned down two offers to stay at the Brentford Community Stadium.

In his press conference prior to Brentford's trip across London to Arsenal, Frank confirmed that Raya's future was now in doubt.

He said: "I think if he turns [the contract] down twice then unfortunately that's a signal. We made two really good offers but that's fine, it's a free world. We can't force anyone."

The Danish manager then revealed the Bees' asking price for one of their key players.

When asked about his chances of keeping the Spaniard, he explained: "I hope he will stay forever but it looks like it could be difficult with the contract situation.

"He must be at least £40 million plus. If he had three years [on his contract], it would be £70 million. How much was Kepa [Arrizabalaga]? He is at least as good as him."

Following Frank's comments, Raya released a statement to Press Association (quotes via Goal).

He said: "I don't think it's the right time to sign a contract at the moment. I'm really, really happy and right now, I'm just thinking about doing the best for the team and trying to push for Europe.

"I was offered a new contract last year and one in January but we didn't reach an agreement. I would like to see what happens in summer, however I'm happy at Brentford."
