Manchester United star Diogo Dalot ignored Erik ten Hag’s request by admitting he was obsessed by the prospect of winning a trophy this season.

Last night ten Hag’s side defeated Everton 3-1 in the third round of the FA Cup, netting through Antony, Marcus Rashford and a Conor Coady own goal.

The result piled more pressure on Toffees boss Frank Lampard and put United another step closer to lifting their first silverware of any kind since the 2017 Europa League, which was secured under the reign of Jose Mourinho.

Winning a trophy is a realistic prospect for the rejuvenated Old Trafford club this term, with ten Hag’s side also taking on League 1’s Charlton in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

When ten Hag was asked about the prospect of United finally winning a trophy this term, the Dutchman said: "I know Man United are always aiming for trophies and we are going for that.

"We cannot force this and have to focus on the next game, not focus on trophies, that is far away. We have to work on the team and development."

Dalot defies ten Hag’s words

RIght-back Dalot opposed his boss' sentiments by admitting he was determined to win a trophy with United this season.

The Portugal international said, via the Mirror: "It is our goal, to play for finals, to play in tournaments and win trophies - we want to make progress and today was one step further for us."

"It has to become an obsession for us to win trophies for our fans!

"They deserve it, they have been a long time without seeing it and I think for us players we have a good chance this season and like I say we have a good chance to put Manchester United back on top, fighting for trophies and we want to do that."

United’s victory over Everton was their seventh in succession, while it also marked the seventh time in a row the in-form Rashford netted at Old Trafford.

After a difficult start to the season, the Red Devils appear more likely than ever to end their six-year wait for silverware. Meanwhile, in the Premier League, they sit in fourth and are beginning to breathe down the necks of fierce rivals Manchester City.
