Man Utd could capitalise on Man City's loss in search for Ronaldo replacement

Manchester United are reportedly targeting Tottenham striker Harry Kane as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester United are targeting Tottenham striker Harry Kane as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, according to reports.

Ronaldo departed the Red Devils on Tuesday by mutual agreement, under a week after his controversial interview with Piers Morgan was televised.

The 37-year-old is, therefore, now a free agent, is on the lookout for a new club. He is currently playing for Portugal in the World Cup in Qatar.

United, meanwhile, are on the lookout for his replacement, and have already been linked with various strikers.

They are reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez. In fact, Spanish outlet Fichajes claim United have a three-player striker shortlist, which also features Napoli's Victor Osimhen, as well as Kane.

They claim that any deal for Kane depends on his contract situation at Spurs, with his current deal set to expire in 2024. At that point, the England star would be 30 years of age.

Harry Kane: Man City tried to sign striker

Kane has been a long-term transfer target of Man City, with Pep Guardiola's side having been keen on signing the striker on numerous occasions.

The 29-year-old even told Tottenham chiefs of his desire to depart London last May, just before Euro 2020.

But the striker eventually remained at Spurs, and talk about his future has cooled somewhat since then.

Speaking in August of last year about why the move to City failed, Guardiola said (quotes via FourFourTwo): "The club [City] did absolutely everything.

"We didn't talk about Tottenham, not even one offer, because they didn't want to negotiate, and when one team wants to negotiate, there is nothing to say."

The Citizens did not sign a striker that summer, despite the departure of Sergio Aguero.

They elected to wait a year, before completing a deal for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.

And while that signing now means a deal for Kane would be extremely unlikely, United could succeed where City failed and bring one of the world's top strikers to Old Trafford.
