Roy Keane booed by Liverpool fans as he comes on during ‘Legend of the North’ clash

Roy Keane booed by Liverpool fans as he comes on during ‘Legend of the North’ clash

Manchester United legends took on Liverpool legends at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Roy Keane was back in a Manchester United shirt as he came on as a substitute against Liverpool for the ‘Legends of the North’ clash.

It was the second leg of the clash after the first leg at Old Trafford ended with a 3-1 Liverpool win. The Red Devils needed a huge performance if they wanted to overturn the deficit from the first match.

United’s starting eleven included the likes of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov. Whilst Liverpool had former stars such as Xabi Alonso, Maxi Rodriguez and Jerzy Dudek in their ranks.

In the second half, United called on Keane as he made his much anticipated appearance back in a United shirt.

As expected, the Anfield crowd greeted him with boos as the atmosphere turned hostile.

Keane was subsequently booed every time he had a touch of the ball.

Fans reacted on social media.

One said: “Roy Keane still coming on to boos at Anfield. Some things never change.”

Another tweeted: “Of course Roy Keane would get booed by the Liverpool fans, brutal atmosphere hahaha.”

A third fan added: “A fantastic chorus of boos for Roy Keane as he enters the pitch, not forgiven for those games back in the day.”

Berbatov gave United the lead inside 10 minutes with a stunning outside of the boot finish into the top corner, leaving Dudek with no chance.

United went into the half time break 1-0 up with Liverpool needing a fightback in the second half.

One minute into the second period, Liverpool got their equaliser through Mark Gonzalez after a Jaap Stam error allowed Robbie Keane to create the chance.

In the 82nd minute, Liverpool nudged themselves in front after a smart finish from Florent Sinama Pongolle. The game ended 2-1 to the hosts and United lost 5-2 over the two legs.
