Fans think Bruno Fernandes has aimed a dig towards Manchester United with his farewell message for David de Gea.

After 12 years at United, De Gea announced on Saturday afternoon that he will be leaving the club.

Over the last few weeks, speculation about the Spaniard’s future has been the talk of the town.

Whilst it was reported that there were offers on the table, De Gea has been a free agent since the end of June.

After the announcement, Fernandes took to Instagram to send a farewell message to De Gea.

The Portuguese wrote: “You deserved to say goodbye to the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories.”

Fans felt that the statement from Fernandes was a little dig at United.

One said: “Glad to see the squad acknowledging this as well. Absolute travesty he never got the thankyou and goodbye he deserved at that Fulham game.”

Another tweeted: “Bruno is right. DDG deserved a better farewell.”

A third fan added: “My Captain!! Absolutely spot on! De Gea deserves a statue outside Old Trafford for what he’s done for Manchester United.”

Someone else wrote: “They did the same with Lingard,Pogba,Dave. It seems to be a trend at United.”

Whilst a fifth commented: “Worse run club in the history of the sport.”

In his statement, De Gea wrote: “I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters.

“I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride everytime I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestows upon a few lucky footballers.”

He continued: “It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.”

This week, United have been linked with a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as they look to replace De Gea ahead of the 23/24 season.
