Manchester United fans are all saying the same thing about Frenkie de Jong's performance for Barcelona.

De Jong played the full game as Barca and Man United played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou on Thursday.

The Dutch midfielder, who was wanted by Erik ten Hag following his Man United appointment last summer, started in the middle of the park, but failed to influence the game.

He was unable to get going, with Man United's midfield of Casemiro and Fred dominating the engine room of the pitch.

And Man United fans took aim at De Jong following his underwhelming performance as they referenced the summer signing of Casemiro while praising Fred's impressive showing.

One Twitter user wrote: "Frenkie De Jong really stank it up in front of his father Ten Hag."

A second tweeted: "I’m so happy we got Casemiro over De Jong, he great but ain’t got that dawg in him."

A third added: "Fred deserves huge credit for tonight, he stopped Frenkie de Jong from having an influence on the game."

A fourth commented: "If you wondered what happened to Frenkie de Jong."

A fifth said: "I saw De Jong in the lineups, how come he didn’t play the game, did he get injured while warming up?"

De Jong will look to rectify his showing against Man United in the return leg next week.

He could line up at Old Trafford, having been strongly linked with a move to the Red Devils last summer.

Man United are thought to still be keen on signing the 25-year-old, with Paul Scholes talking up the star player and named his best position before kick-off.

Asked if the Netherlands international is a player he would like to see at Man United next season, Scholes replied: "Yes, of course he is. I think he is better in the pivot position as a Busquets-type.

"I think he was probably brought here to replace Busquets, but Busquets keeps going. I know he is injured now. Now that Busquets is out of the team I think he is a little bit more suited to it.

"I don't think he liked playing in that forward role. Look, I might be wrong, but in my personal opinion I think he is better in the holding role when he can replace Busquets."
