Man City to receive the highest sum of any club for releasing players for the World Cup

Manchester City are set to receive the highest sum of any club in the world from FIFA for releasing their players for the 2022 World Cup.

The Blues released 16 players for the tournament in Qatar, with FIFA set to reimburse the Premier League club.

"FIFA will distribute $209 million (£169 million) in its Club Benefits Programme based on about $10,000 (£8,100) for each day a club’s player has been in the tournament as well as the week-long official preparation period before the World Cup started," The Times has reported.

As a result, Man City stand to earn a cool $5.58m (£4.5 million) - the most of any club in the world.

That's more than Barcelona ($4.1 million) despite the Catalan giants releasing 17 players for the World Cup.

Eight of the 17 Barca players were in the Spain squad. But as they were eliminated in the last-16 stage by Morocco, they're overall payment is affected.

Man City still have one representative at the World Cup in the shape of Julian Alvarez, who starred in his national's team's victory over Croatia on Tuesday.

He bagged a brace to help Argentina reach the World Cup final.

Man City had a large England contingent, with Kyle Walker, John Stones, Kalvin Phillips, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden all included in Gareth Southgate's squad.

Pep Guardiola's side had three Portugal players; Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva.

They also had Aymeric Laporte and Rodrigo in the Spain squad while Ilkay Gundogan was named in the Germany squad.

Not to mention Ederson, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and Kevin De Bruyne in the Brazil, Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium squads respectively.

Man City could have a World Cup winner in their ranks upon the resumption of the 2022/23 season.

Alvarez's Argentina will be involved in the World Cup final, with Lionel Messi praising the 22-year-old following his showing against Croatia.

"Every player did very well, but if I have to choose I would give this [Man of the Match] award to Julian Alvarez," he said. "He had an extraordinary game."
