Luka Modric looked visibly emotional following Croatia's defeat to Spain in the Nations League final as fans believe he 'deserves' better.

Spain beat Croatia 5-4 on penalties to win the Nations League on Sunday, condemning Modric and Co to yet more international heartbreak.

Of course, Croatia lost the 2018 World Cup final and suffered a defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup last year.

Croatia once again fell short in their pursuit of their first major international title despite the Real Madrid midfielder's heroics.

The 37-year-old was classy as ever in the middle of the park, but failed to steer his national team to international glory.

Fans on social media felt for the player and reckon he 'deserves' better considering the showings he's delivered on the international scene time after time.

One Twitter user wrote: "This guy deserves better. Better luck next time, Croatia."

A second tweeted: "I feel so bad for Luka Modric man always carries his country every tournament just to let down by others."

A third added: "Modric achieved this with that team is much more than winning a trophy..."

A fourth said: "Man as much as I hate Madrid It hurts seeing Modric miss out on such trophies."

Another commented: "Modric deserves a win with Croatia. He's made Croatia one of the fiercest competitors in the world."

Modric has been tipped to call time on his international career, but refused to make a decision following last night's result.

"I have decided my future, but I’m not going to say it today," he said.

Even though he's been unable to land any major international honours, Modric will still go down as one of the greatest players of his generation, having starred for his club over the years.
