Truss was named the new leader of the Conservative party on Monday afternoon.

Truss, who lived in Leeds when she was younger, has since relocated to Norfolk and switched her allegiances from the Yorkshire club to Norwich.

She said to a live audience: “Now since I lived in Yorkshire I have relocated to Norfolk and I have I’m afraid to say, I’m afraid to say this at Elland Road.

“I have become a supporter of Norwich City FC, they’re a fine family club, you know what can I say? Delia(Simith, Norwich City owner) is a fantastic woman , great cook books.”

When Truss announced that she is now a fan of the Canaries, it drew boos from the Yorkshire crowd.

Truss went on to say that the Conservative Party needs to channel the spirit of Leeds legend Don Revie as they have to beat Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer in the next general election.

Norwich fans were quick to show their discontent over the news that the country’s new Prime Minister is a supporter of their club.

One fan wrote: “The last thing this lovely city needs is sodding Liz Truss announcing she's a Norwich City supporter. Think I'll move.”

Another tweeted: “Liz Truss, stop saying that you like @NorwichCityFC. No you don’t. I forbid you to like them.”

A third fan added: “Liz Truss calling Keir Starmer a patronising plastic patriot seconds after declaring her absolute unshakable devotion to her Yorkshire/Leeds heritage and following it up by announcing she’s started supporting Norwich City.”

Truss and former chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak were going head to head as they battled to replace Boris Johnson as the leader of the country.

Truss received 57% of the votes and was the winner.
