"What a player" - Klopp told Liverpool should have signed midfielder who's tearing up the Premier League

Liverpool told they should have signed James Maddison

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has suggested one Premier League star would be ‘perfect’ for Jurgen Klopp’s midfield three.

The midfield woes have been prevalent this season at Anfield, with injuries, inconsistency and general lack of confidence in the area a real reason why their season has stuttered thus far.

The return of Thiago Alcantara into the role has helped, but even with his presence, the Reds drew pitifully at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Fabinho has been painfully inconsistent, with Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, the young guns, being the main bright sparks. We haven’t even seen the likes of Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain take to the field yet in league football.

Enrique, who featured for the Reds between 2012-16, believes that Leicester City’s James Maddison would be the ideal addition to the Reds’ midfield.

“He will have been the perfect number 8 for us in the summer. What a player,” the Spaniard wrote on Twitter.

Despite the Foxes’ frankly dismal start to their season, Maddison has bagged five goals and picked up two assists for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Maddison is certainly accustomed to links to other clubs, with Newcastle United launching a last-minute bid for him in the summer window.

Since joining Leicester from Norwich in 2018, he’s developed into one of the country’s elite creative talents - and last season took huge strides to reach his true potential by scoring 18 goals in 53 matches across all competitions.

It seems as if he has ironed out his inconsistencies to become one of the best players outside of the traditional top six - and if Leicester continue their rotten start to the season, elite clubs will swarm around the 25-year-old.

After Leicester’s penalty loss at Anfield in the Carabao Cup last season, Maddison described the atmosphere created by Liverpool fans as ‘the best in England’ - could he be seeing that every other weekend in a Red shirt?

If it was down to Enrique, potentially!
