Liverpool's task made harder as Real Madrid receive double boost ahead of Champions League clash

Liverpool's task made harder as Real Madrid receive double boost ahead of Champions League clash

Liverpool receive a setback ahead of the Real Madrid game.

Liverpool's task in the Champions League has been made harder following a double injury boost for Real Madrid ahead of their clash on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp's side face an almost impossible task at the Bernabeu as they attempt to overturn a 5-2 first-leg defeat against Madrid in the Champions League last 16.

The Reds have had a turbulent campaign and are in a tight league battle to finish in the top four and some fans were hoping that the five-time winners could've gone on a European run and avenged their woes.

However, that dream was virtually ended when Spanish giants Madrid pulled off a miraculous result at Anfield two weeks ago.

Their task in the second leg has also been made even harder with the news of a double injury boost for Los Blancos.

According to The Athletic journalist Mario Cortegana, both Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy will be available for the game against Liverpool.

Posting on Twitter, he said: "Mendy and Benzema have completed the training with the group and both will be available against Liverpool. Alaba is better but he will not play on Wednesday."

Another setback for Liverpool

The news is another setback for Liverpool who head into the game off the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Whilst they have caused big European upsets many times in the past - most notably overturning a three-goal deficit to beat Barcelona in 2019 - it would be a miracle if it happened again.

Back then the Reds had the Anfield crowd on their side whereas they now have to travel to Spain and pick up a result.

Most supporters will just be hoping that there's not another humiliation and will be keeping their eyes on the league campaign which provides the best opportunity for the club to qualify for next season's competition.
